Ginger plant is native to India and Malaysia, but it grows in all tropical monsoon areas. This plant has long leaves, and yellow or purple flowers and it is about one meter tall. Its root has an irregular, and lumpy shape, varying in color between brown and yellow. Ginger does not produce any fruit: the part of the plant that we use is the root, that has the beneficial properties, the active substance is the gingerol, which gives that typical pungent and spicy taste.
Its use is increasingly widespread, from Asia to Africa and more and more in Europe, and is to be counted among the "superfoods", foods of vegetable origin with a high content of antioxidants, proteins, omega-3, minerals, fiber and other essential nutrients with proven beneficial health effects. Ginger root is one of the most famous superfood, and it is used for cooking but also for medicinal and officinal purposes, thanks to its stimulating and beneficial properties. Ginger contains starch, resin, and essential oils and it is a powerful antioxidant. It has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and anticancer properties, and it’s used almost everywhere in the world. In Europe, it has been widely used in recent years, especially in vegan diets, the dried ginger root powder. In Asia, ginger has always been used fresh, as a treatment for the immune system, to prevent the flu, and to help people with other problems such as fatigue, high blood pressure, rheumatism, and stomach pain.
Ginger is an edible root, with a pleasant, warm and pungent aroma. Today it is increasingly used as a condiment and spice, and we can find it in many Asian recipes, thanks to its aromatic and refreshing taste. - 450 gr flour
- 70 gr sugar
- 25 gr butter
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 tablespoon ginger
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/2 tablespoon clove powder
- 1 egg
- 200 gr honey
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
Melt the butter and honey and mix them with the sugar, spices and a pinch of salt. Mix also the flour and baking powder and then add the egg. Once the dough is ready, let it rest at least a couple of hours in the fridge. Roll out the dough, and create your biscuits. Then, put them in the oven at 180°.
In Southeast Asia, this root is mainly used to make tea, especially during slimming or vegan diets. Ginger tea has several benefits: it acts for stomach problems and is extremely useful to fight nausea and headaches, and last but not least, it helps to relax your stomach, being a true natural antiseptic. To make ginger tea, just cut the ginger root into small pieces and put it in the hot tea container. Also, add some lemon juice to enhance the anti-inflammatory effect. Then just wait about 15 minutes and drink it!
Ginger aside, it is essential to get proper nutrition and hydration. People who eat a well-balanced diet are in general healthier, with stronger immune systems and lower risk of chronic illnesses and infectious diseases: a few simple diet changes can help you a lot in this sense.
